Taos, New Mexico: Adventure, Art, and a Hint of Magic

I just wrapped up a three-week assignment in Taos, New Mexico, and I can’t stop thinking about it. This high-desert community sits at the base of the Monte Cristo Mountains and the Carson National Forest, a setting that feels both expansive and intimate—like the land itself is inviting you to slow down and lean in.

Taos is a playground for the adventurous. Days can be filled with hiking, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, fly-fishing, horseback riding, ATV adventures, hunting, or skiing when the snow arrives. But this isn’t just a destination for adrenaline seekers—there’s a softer side to Taos that reveals itself through its art, its people, and the way the light moves across the mesas at sunset.

Where We Stayed: From Barefoot Luxury to Boutique Chic

One of the highlights of my stay was at Gem Hacienda, a beautifully designed retreat just outside the bustle of town. It’s the kind of place that feels instantly grounding—earth-toned interiors, mountain views, quiet corners to read or journal. Perfect for families, small groups, or anyone craving space and stillness.

In town, I had the pleasure of checking into Hotel Willa, Taos’ newest boutique gem. It’s playful and elegant, offering all the right touches for a restorative stay: a sauna, hot tub, cold-plunge pool, heated outdoor pool, a lively bar, and Juliette, their onsite restaurant that’s quickly becoming a local favorite.

Savoring Taos: The Foodie Trail

Taos has an unexpected but delightful food scene—creative, diverse, and a little bit edgy.

Some of the places that made an impression:

  • Tomorrow & Tomorrow – A bright, modern coffee shop where sourdoughthat became my morning ritual spot.

  • The Farmhouse – For rustic-fresh breakfasts and brunches.

  • Guitz – Comfort food done with heart.

  • Lambert’s – A refined dinner choice with a charming, intimate vibe.

  • The Golden Piñon – A local favorite for its cozy, elevated flavors.

And when we ventured up into the mountains of Red River, we found Vine, where the mountain air pairs beautifully with their hearty, welcoming menu.

The Art, the People, the Spirit

Beyond the adventure and the dining scene, Taos’ heartbeat is its people—authentic, down-to-earth, and effortlessly welcoming. It’s also a haven for artists, with vibrant galleries, music venues, unique boutiques, and the living history of Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I left feeling like Taos had wrapped me up in its warmth and sent me home carrying a little piece of its soul.
